Why was this dress created?

Years of Living Kindly (YOLK) creates "dresses to beautify Asian women." This is because we believe that the values of Japan's nature, culture, art, and "stories" that traditional kimonos once held should also be cherished by today's Japanese and Asian women on important occasions.

Therefore, at YOLK, the director writes a short story every season, accompanied by the background of the dress and its patterns, the stage, and the prayers and wishes infused into them. By creating dresses that play a role like kimonos, we aim to cherish the formal attire of Japanese women.

The stage for this season's story is Gunma. The inspiration comes from Gunma's mountainous landscape, nature, city, craftsmanship, female artisans, and the history of factories. From a story born out of being completely fascinated by feeling this with all five senses, one of the dresses, "Mountain Mist," was created. I wanted to incorporate the soul of the land of gentle harmony and fusion into the dress.

The brand name "Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)" is the English translation of our interpretation of "Wabi-sabi."

How was this dress made?

The overlapping mountains of mist encircle the city like a panorama and overlook it. The scenery seemed as if majestic gods were lined up, looking down on the people living at the foot of the mountains. In "Mountain Mist," we used fabric produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, 100% silk woven thinly and lightly like mist.

This is a dress with three layers of the thin and light fabric made of 100% silk, delicately layered onto the hem of the supple silk knit made of 100% silk.

This dress is imbued with the wish of "ascension" associated with the ascending wind of mountain mist. It is an offering to the wearer or the event they participate in by wearing it.

What kind of dress is this?

This is a thick dress with lining that can be worn from summer to autumn. It is a long dress that beautifies Japanese women on special occasions and in everyday life. The slim dress, which makes the most of the suppleness of silk knit material, can also be worn at ceremonies and weddings because it has a glossy finish and is elegant at the hem.

Because it is knit, it is resistant to wrinkles, making it suitable for travel.

なぜ、このドレスは作られたのでしょうか。

Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)　では「日本の女性を美しくするドレス」を作っています。それはかつてのお着物が持っていた、日本の自然、文化、芸術、そして「物語」の価値観を、今日の日本の女性にも、大事な場面でまとってほしいと思うからです。それはきっと、お守りのような役割を果たします。大切な人の結婚式の参列、特別な食事、晴れ舞台、家族写真、季節の行事で、着てもらいたいと考えました。

そのため、YOLKでは、ディレクターが短編「着物語」を毎季執筆し、ドレスやその模様の背景、舞台、そしてそこに込めた祈りや願いを、添えています。そうして、着物のような「役割」を果たすドレスを作ることで、日本の女性の正装を大切にすることを目指して作られました。

今季の物語の舞台は、群馬です。インスピレーションは、群馬の山滴る空、自然、街、ものづくり、女工さんや工場の歴史。これを五感で感じ、すっかり魅了されてできた物語から生まれたのが、ドレスの一つが「山霧」です。ゆるやかな調和と融合の地の魂を、ドレスにとり入れたいと思いました。

ブランド名である“Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)”は、私たちが考える「侘び寂び・わびさび」の英訳です。
