Why was this dress made?

Years of Living Kindly (YOLK) creates 'dresses that make Asian women beautiful.' This is because we want today's women to wear the values of Asian and Japanese nature, culture, art, and 'storytelling' that traditional kimonos once held dear at important moments.

Therefore, YOLK's director writes a short story every season, along with dresses and their pattern backgrounds, stages, and the prayers and wishes contained therein. Thus, the 'dresses that play a role' like kimonos aim to cherish the formal wear of Japanese women and are made for this purpose.

The stage of this season's story is Gunma. The inspiration comes from Gunma's dripping mountains, nature, city, craftsmanship, female artisans, and factory history. From a story that was born after feeling this with all five senses and being completely fascinated, one of the dresses, 'Hana Hotaru,' was born. We wished to incorporate the soul of Gunma, a land of nature, gentle harmony and fusion, into the dress.

The brand name "Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)" is the English translation of our interpretation of "wabi-sabi."

How was this dress made?

This dress is made using fabric from Gunma, a land where living beings dwell, celebrating the richness of nature. The glittering gold threads scattered here and there are the light of fireflies. We used fabric from Gunma, which is like fireflies happily dancing around flowers.

The raised nap gives it dimensionality. This dress is made using the 'backside' of domestically produced jacquard, finished by artisans by hand. The vibrant green lining can be worn reversibly.

There is a famous place in Gunma called "Basho." It is said that Basho's poem, 'My fire among the trees / Fireflies and flowers nest,' means 'Fireflies make their own light into flowers and lodge in the trees.' This dress is imbued with the wish for 'beauty of contribution.' It is an offering to the person wearing it or participating in the event wearing it.

It's a reversible dress with a full lining, so it's not thin. It's a thick dress with a lining that can be worn from summer to autumn.

1.ドレスの背景のご紹介

なぜ、このドレスは作られたのでしょうか。

Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)　では「日本の女性を美しくするドレス」を作っています。それはかつてのお着物が持っていた、日本の自然、文化、芸術、そして「物語」の価値観を、今日の日本の女性にも大事な場面でまとってほしいと思うからです。それはきっと、お守りのような役割を果たします。大切な人の結婚式の参列、特別な食事、晴れ舞台、家族写真、季節の行事で、着てもらいたいと考えました。

そのためYOLKでは、ディレクターが短編「着物語」を毎季執筆し、ドレスやその模様の背景、舞台、そしてそこに込めた祈りや願いを、添えています。そうして、着物のような「役割」を果たすドレスを作ることで、日本の女性の正装を大切にすることを目指して作られているのが、*Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)　の「日本の女性を美しくするドレス」です。

今季の物語の舞台は、群馬です。インスピレーションは、群馬の山滴る空、自然、街、ものづくり、女工さんや工場の歴史。これを五感で感じ、すっかり魅了されてできた物語から生まれたのが、ドレスの一つが「花蛍」です。ゆるやかな調和と融合の地の魂を、ドレスにとり入れたいと思いました。

ブランド名である“Years of Living Kindly (YOLK)”は、私たちが考える「侘び寂び・わびさび」の英訳です。

どのように、このドレスは作られたのでしょうか。

自然の豊かさを喜ぶ、生き物が暮らす土地。ところどころにキラキラと散っているラメの金糸は、蛍の光。まるで蛍が花の周りを幸せに舞っているような、群馬の生地を使いました。

その毛羽立ちには、立体感があります。職人が手作業で仕上げる、国産ジャガードの「裏面」を、表に使って作っているドレスです。鮮やかな緑の裏地は、リバーシブルに着ることができます。

群馬には有名な「芭蕉」という場所があります。「己が火を木々の蛍や花の宿**（**おのがひをきぎにほたるやはなのやど）」　という芭蕉の詩は「蛍は、自分の発する光を、花として、木々に宿す」という意味があるそうです。このドレスには「貢献の美」の願いを込めました。それは纏う人、あるいはそれを着て参加する行事に、捧げる想いです。
